The Sandpoint Cross Country team was in Lewiston this weekend for the 3rd Annual Inland Empire Classic, and took 2nd place to Coeur d'Alene in both the boys and girls Varsity races. Coeur d'Alene scored 46 points, Sandpoint had 57, and Lewiston was a distant 3rd with 129. Katherine Kaul once again lead the way with a 19:37 and placing 5th overall. She was followed by Hannah Davidson in 11th, Claire Pierce in 13th, Niah Brass in 16th, Rainey Woodward in 17th, Sharon Rowe in 18th, and Cori McClelland in 21st. The girls once again showed that their strength is in their pack, placing all 7 running in the top 21 in a field of 90 runners.
In the boys race there were 16 full teams. Coeur d'Alene won with 61 points, Sandpoint was 2nd with 79, and Lewiston was 3rd with 91, which is the first time this season that the boys have topped a strong Lewiston team. Fin Lund stepped up to take the number 1 spot for Sandpoint, finishing 5th and running a 16:41. That ties him for 9th on the All Time SHS 5k list. Clay Rasmussen was 17th, Mark Kennaly 20th, Reilly Wolfe 31st, Cole Dillon 36th, and Dutt Rogers 44th out of 127 total runners to round out the Varsity 7.
The JV girls gave in incredible performance, led by the 1-2 finish of Junior Dana Beaty and Sophomore Farli Boden. The two ran stride for stride the entire race, crossing the line at a near photo finish. Dana finished with a 21:20.9 and Farli had a 21:21.1, beating the 3rd place runner by over 40 seconds. Chloe Braedt, Clara Sallent, Erin Meek, Saydee Brass and Mackenzie Wolfe rounded out the top 7, leading Sandpoint to a 2nd place team finish in Girls JV. In the boys JV race, freshman Sloan Woodward led the boys team with an 11th place finish, crossing the line in an 18:22. He was followed closely by teammate James Bradley in 13th, Peik Lund-Andersen in 18th, Daniel Radford in 19th and Ike Rogers in 22nd. Freshman Gabe Merithew and Junior Riley McGinnis rounded out the top 7, leading the JV Boys to a 3rd place finish out of the 13 teams in the race.
Sandpoint doesn't race again until its home meet on October 10th, which will be hosted at Travers Park this year. Instead of racing next weekend they will be training through and hosting the 5th Annual SHSXC Cross Country Kids Clinic on Friday, Oct. 2nd at 3:30pm at SHS Track. This is a free event for all 4th, 5th and 6th graders in the district, and includes a 1 hour clinic followed by a 1 mile race at the end. The event is free of charge and is run by the Sandpoint High School Cross Country Athletes.
