Sandpoint Track and Field completed their season this weekend in Boise at the State Championships. In all, there were 6 medals earned with top 6 placements.
On Friday evening, the boys sprint medley team comprised of Mark Kennaly, Kenny Kovalchuk, Kyle Perry and Kaleb Merrill raced to an exciting 5th place finish. Then in the 3200 Jacob Graham placed 7th to score 2 points for the team and running personal record of 9:59.1. Sam Powell was 10th, also with a personal record of 10:14.04. Mikhaela Woodward was 9th in the girls 3200 after falling off of the lead pack at the first mile. In the preliminaries Mark Kennaly was the only person to make it to finals by placing 7th fastest of all heats, Grace Bradley placed 13th in her 400 preliminaries, Kyle Perry was forced to pull up 40 meters into the 100 meters with a pulled hamstring, and Claire Keener ran a great 200 and placed 11th after a 15th place finish in the 100 - both PRs. In the field events Tyler Harris placed 15th in the Triple Jump and Sam Palmer was 8th in the Disc.
On Saturday Mikhaela Woodard started out the day by placing 3rd in the 1600 with a gutsy performance. With the entire field having a slow first two laps she attacked the race, taking the lead and pulling the field out to make it a 3 person race. She was caught by the 2 girls but ran a fantastic 5:16, closing the last 800 in under 2:35. Jacob Graham was up next, and he ran a personal record 4:34 to take 8th place, again scoring for the team. He attacked the middle of the race jumping into 5th place while a pack trailed him and finished strong.
In the girls 800 Sandpoint had 2 medalists. Mikhaela Woodward jumped into the lead early and set pace with Hannah Davidson tucking into the top 6. With 300 to go 2 people passed Mikhaela, and she fought to the finish line, catching one and placing 2nd in 2:23.74. Hannah had a great kick, finishing in 5th place at 2:24.74. Mark Kennaly made the finals in the 400 and got off to a slow start which had him in 7th, in the last 200 he ramped up his kick, catching 2 and nearly catching fourth place on the home stretch. In the mens 800, Mark was racing in a tough double with about 45 minutes of recovery, and he ran a 2:03 for 11th place. Kenny Kovalchuk finished with a 2:08. Finishing up the medal count, Madi Schoening placed 5th with a 16’1.5” long jump, and Kaleb Merrill placed 4th with a long jump of 20’ 6.75”.
It was a great season with amazing results throughout the year. Thank you to all athletes who participated and made this a successful year. The end of season awards night will be on May 20th at 7pm in the SHS Commons.
