SHS Distance Shines at the Meet of Champions

The District I Meet of Champions took place at Post Falls High School on Thursday, and the Sandpoint Distance team continued to post great results, improving on many season and overall performances. The Meet of Champions selects the top 16 runners in each event from all of District I, regardless of classification, for one final competitive meet prior to the Regional Championships.
Mikhaela Woodward set the tone for the day in the 1600, winning the race in a 5:25.13, 7 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Cori McClelland was 7th, setting a new PR with a 5:51, Sharon Rowe a season PR 5:53, Qetzal Hogue aPR of 5:57, and Emily Marshall a PR of 5:58. In the boys 1600, Matt Cloud ran a PR 4:50, placing 5th in the race. Finn Lund-Andersen was 7th 4:52 and Chris Cordova was 8th in 4:58.
In the 800, Hannah Davidson led the majority of the race, running a 2:28.09 and out kicking the 2nd place runner by a 1/2 second. In the boys race, Kenny Kovalchuk placed 3rd in the race, running a 2:08.21.
The open 400 saw strong performances as well. Mark Kennaly won the boys race in a 51.68, coming close to his PR on the windy afternoon. In the girls race, Lauren Orr ran a 1:06.31, and Grace Bradley ran a 1:07.13. For the 3200, Claire Pierce fought hard and finished 3rd with a 250m kick and running a time of 12:47. In the boys race, Jacob Graham finished second, finishing the race in 10:01 and running a 20 second PR. Sam Powell was 4th in 10:15, running a 13 second PR. Andy McGinnis and Peik Lund-Andersen finished in 10:46 and 11:00. This is the last meet before Regionals next Friday at Coeur d’Alene High School.
