The Sandpoint Cross Country team hosted the 5th Annual Will Johnson Invitational this weekend, with nearly 500 runners competing from age ranges of pre-school through adult. The day honored team mate Will Johnson, who passed away in a skiing accident 5 years ago, and once again the weather was nearly perfect for running on the scenic course as it capped out in the mid-60s. The day started out with the 6th grade and under 1/2 mile race in which Levi Bowen of Priest River won in a time of 2:45. Elizabeth McCracken won the girls race with a time of 3:25.

 

Next up were the middle school races, and Niah Brass continued her strong season by winning the girls 1.6 mile race with great kick, running a time of 9.52.34 and out kicking Isabelle Kirk of Lakeland who ran a 9:52.86. Coeur d’Alene Charter won the team championship with 37 points, with Sandpoint getting 4th out of 6 teams with 93. In the boys race Sloan Woodward surged at the mile and never looked back, winning the boys race in a time of 9:20 over 2nd place Travis Plunkett of Timberlake who ran a 9:32. Also in the top 10 for Sandpoint were Conrad Becker (5th in 9:41), Connor Matlosz (6th in 9:44) and Ryan Roos (10th in 9:52). The Sandpoint boys won the team title with 36 points.

 

The JV races were next, and the Sandpoint girls continued to show their depth. Running without #1,2 and 8 today they still placed 2nd in the JV race with 53 points behind Coeur d’Alene. Erin Meek led the way for Sandpoint, placing 8th with a 23:20, and Karlee Williams was next for the girls with a 23:23 in 9th place. Both run under the Varsity Standard bringing the team total to 16! The JV boys also showed the exceptional depth of the boys team, winning the JV team title by scoring 43 over 2nd place Coeur d’Alene who was 2nd with 63. The boys were led once again by freshman Finan Lund, who was 3rd place overall with a 18:14. Reilly Wolfe was 4th running a 18:20, and Clay Rasmussen was 8th in a 19:00 round out the Sandpoint top 10 runners.

The Varsity girls had a challenging task of running the home meet without their number 1 and 2 runners, but stepped up to the challenge and placed 2nd overall to Regional power Coeur d’Alene. CDA scored 29 points, Sandpoint 62 and Timberlake 87. Rainey Woodward led the way, placing 6th overall and running a 19:35. She was followed by Sharon Rowe, who was 8th with a 19:47. Claire Pierce was 14th in 20:40, Hannah Davidson was 16th in a 21:00 (moving her to #22 on the All Time 5k list), and Cori McClelland was 19th in a 21:28 to round out the scoring 5. Sandpoint top 7 girls are all on the top 25 list now.

The boys Varsity placed 4th in the meet, falling to 5A competitors Lake City, Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston. The gap from 2nd to 4th was only 11 points, and the boys are in good position for Regionals and State right now. Leading the way for the boys today was Jacob Graham, who finished in 8th place with a 17:01. Chris Cordova had a breakout race, running a 17:06 for 11th place, and moving to #19 on the All-Time 5k list. Sam Powell was 13th with a 17:09, Kenny Kovalchuk 24th with a 17:29, and Matt Cloud 27th with a 17:33.

The day finished with the annual Open 5k race for anyone interested, and there were over 70 people who took to the course. Matt Brass won the race with a time of 16:47, and Aubrey Frantz won the womens race. Today was a celebration of Will and a celebration of Cross Country. Next up for Sandpoint is Regionals, which will be run at Riley Creek on October 23 11:30 AM with the Varsity Girls.
