Sandpoint Packs up to win Inland Empire Klassic

Sandpoint girls and boys varsity teams won the 3rd annual Inland Empire Klassic this weekend in the Lewiston Orchards. The Girls Varsity Team had 4 of the top 5 finishers in the race and all 7 in the top 16 out of 92 runners. There were 12 full girls teams, and they won with a score of 21, distancing themselves from 2nd place Eastmont who scored a 99. Katherine Kaul took 1st place individually with a time of 18:39 and moved into a tie for 3rd on the Sandpoint All-Time top 25 5k list. Mikhaela Woodward was 3rd with a 19:16, Rainey Woodward 4th with a 19:22, moving her to #7 all time. Sharon Rowe was 4th with a 19:44, moving her up to #9 all time. Claire Pierce was 9th place with a 20:33, moving her to 15th on the all time list. Cori McClelland was 15th in 21:11 and Hannah Davidson 16th with a 21:18. The girls pack time for top 5 was a 19:30, moving up over a minute from last years best pack time.

There were 13 full teams in the Boys Varsity Race, and Sandpoint placed 1st in the meet as well, scoring 50 points to beat second place Eastmont who had 80. Out of 104 runners in the race, Kenny Kovalchuk was 7th place running a 16:41, moving him to 7th on the all time 5k list. Sam Powell was 8th, running a 16:44, Jacob Graham was 9th with a 16:49, Andy McGinnis 13th running a 17:01 and moving up to 17 on the all time 5k list, Matt Cloud was 19th with a 17:10 and moving to 21st on the all time list, Chris Cordova was 24th with a 17:21 and moved to 25th on the all time list, and Mark Kennaly was 28th with a 17:32. The boys pack time was a 16:52, which is the fastest team pack time since 1994.


For the JV Teams, the boys took 3rd place overall out of 11 teams and the girls placed 1st out of 4 teams with a very low 16 points, a near perfect score. The girls race had 62 runners, and Lauren Orr won the race with a 22:07. Emily Marshall was 2nd with a 22:12, Dana Beaty was 3rd with a 22:12.5, Grace Bradley was 4th with a 22:35, Megan Frazier was 6th with a 23:13, Saydee Brass 7th with a 23:16, and Erin Meek 10th with a 23:46. The boys race had 125 runners, and Sandpoint again had the winner with Finn Lund, who ran the race in 17:48. Reilly Wolfe was 3rd with an 18:15. The JV teams ran very well, and the team now has 14 boys and 14 girls under the varsity standard. Megan Frazier and Saydee Brass ran under standard for the girls and Riley McGinnis, Dutt Rogers and Daniel Radford for the boys.


Next weekend Sandpoint doesn't race, instead the team will host the annual Kids Clinic on Friday at Sandpoint High School from 3:30 to 5:30. The clinic is for any elementary school kids grades 4-6. At the end of the clinic there will be a 1 mile race. Their next race will be the home meet on October 11th at Riley Creek Campgrounds. Excellent job today SHSXC, time for Championship Month!
