Sandpoint Harriers Collect wins at Spokane Valley

The Sandpoint Cross Country team placed first in the large school division for both the girls and the boys this Saturday at the Runners Soul Erik Anderson XC Invitational. The girls were 2nd overall out of 11 schools, falling short by just 6 points to Western Washington power Sehome 35-41. They were led by a 6th place finish (out of 89) by Senior Mikhaela Woodward, who covered the long course (3.22 miles) in a time of 20:17. She was followed closely by freshman Katherine Kaul, who ran a 20:21 for 7th. Freshman Sharon Rowe was 9th with a 20:34, Rainey Woodward was 10th with a 20:48, and Claire Pierce was 26 with a 21:47. Cori McClelland was 37th with a 23:00, and Hannah Davidson was 38th in a 23:01. With 4 in the top 10 and all of the scoring 5 in the top 26, the girls are continuing to look formidable in the Idaho 4A ranks.

The Sandpoint boys continued to run as a tight pack, winning the large school division and placing 6th out of 19 teams overall. Sam Powell once again led the boys team, placing 20th out of 137 runners for meet-medalist honors, while running a 17:49. Next to cross the finish line, leading the main Bulldog pack was Matt Cloud in 41st in 18:33, then Kenny Kovalchuk in 42nd, Chris Cordova in 43rd, Andy McGinnins in 44th and Jacob Graham in 45th. All 5 were within 5 seconds of each other. Mark Kennaly was the last Varsity Sandpoint finisher, placing 53rd in an 18:57. The boys are running in an exceptionally strong pack, and are looking to move the group up in the placement over the next month to put themselves in a trophy position at the State meet.

In the JV races, the Sandpoint girls were 1st in the large school division and 2nd overall to Sehome , even without their top two runners who were out with sickness. Dana Beaty stepped in with a great performance, placing 10th in the race. The other team scorers were Grace Bradley in 18th, Karlee Williams in 25th, Lindsey Ballard in 33 and Saydee Brass in 34th. The boys also won their division, and were 4 out of 18 teams overall. The scorers for the boys were led by Clay Rasmussen in 10th, Finan Lund-Anderson in 12th, Reilly Wolfe in 14th, Dutt Rogers in 42nd and Daniel Radford in 46th. It was an exceptional showing, and next week the team will be in Lewiston for the Inland Empire Classic.
