Sandpoint Distance shines at Meet of Champions

The District I Meet of Champions took place at Post Falls High School today, and the Sandpoint Distance team continued to post great results, improving on many season and overall performances. The Meet of Champions selects the top 16 runners in each event from all of District I, regardless of classification, for one final competitive meet prior to the Regional Championships.

Mikhaela Woodward set the tone for the day in the 1600, winning the race in a 5:21.31, 7 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Sydney Foster placed 7th with a 5:46, and Cori McClelland set a new PR with a 5:55 in 11th place. In the boys 1600, Sam Levora set 2 records. He improved his school record, and set the Meet of Champions meet record with a 4:16.85, placing 24 seconds ahead of the next runner. Jacob Graham was 4th, running a 4:47, and Alan Orr was 7th with a 4:52. Matt Cloud came back off of illness to run a 5:06.

In the 800, Rainey Woodward led from wire to wire, running a 2:23.79 and placing 6 seconds ahead of the next runner. Bree Jones had a season PR of 2:36 for 6th place. In the boys race, Matt Burgstahler also ran for the wire to wire win, crossing the line in 1:59.87 for the 3 second victory.

The open 400 saw season breakthroughs as well. Lily DeAragon ran a 1:00.95 to place 3rd overall, Lauren Orr ran a 1:04.22 for 6th, and Mark Kennaly broke 53 for the first time ever, finishing in 3rd place with a 52.29. The girls 4x400 team of Lily DeAragon, Lauren Orr, Rainey Woodward and Mikhaela Woodward ran a 4:15 to set a 4 second season PR and place 3rd. The boys 4x400 team of Nathan Schwartz, Jacob Graham, Matt Burgstahler and Mark Kennaly ran a 3:39 for 3rd place also. This is the last meet before Regionals next Friday at Coeur d’Alene High School.
