Sandpoint Runs Strong at Hayden Canyon09/14/2013
The Sandpoint Cross Country team continued to show pack strength and improvement over last year with a strong showing at the Coeur d' Alene Invitational this year at Hayden Canyon. Leading the way was a strong second place finish in the large school race for the boys (placed 5th overall out of 11 schools) with a pack time of 18:16. Leading the way over the challenging and hilly 5k course was Sam Levora, who was the overall winner in a course record 16:18. Jacob Graham was 17th in 18:29 and Sam Powell was 18th in 18:34 to roll into the top 20 out of the 72 runner field. Also running varsity in order of finish for the team were Alan Orr, Mark Kennaly, Adam Bourn and Chris Cordova. The boys outpaced Moscow and Lakeland by a score of 38 to 64 to 88.
The Girls team also placed 2nd in the large school division (placed 3rd overall out of 9 schools) with a pack time of 21:54. Leading the way for the girls team with a 6th place finish was Mikhaela Woodward in a time of 20:46. Rainey Woodward and Sydney Foster were 9th and 10th overall in 21:30 and 21:34. Cori McClelland was 18th in 22:14 to round out the top 20 finishes in the 55 runner field. Also competing for the girls varsity were Lauren Orr and Jacey Lawson. The girls outscored Moscow and Lakeland by a score of 48 to 55 to 108.
For the JV teams, the boys took first place overall out of 8 teams and the girls placed 2nd out of 6 teams. The boys were led by a 3rd place Andy McGinnis in a 19:08, which also earned him a varsity spot in next weeks race. Also in the top 10 for the boys were Kenny Kovalchuk in 7th and Matt Cloud in 9th. For the girls Naomi Bradley was 5th, running a 23:56, and Dana Beaty was 8th in a 24:06. Excellent job today SHSXC!

A lot of people don't realize that about 98 percent of the running I put in is anything but glamorous: 2 percent joyful participation, 98 percent dedication! It's a tough formula. Getting out in the forest in the biting cold and the flattening heat, and putting in kilometer after kilometer.
